Sundays 13th April 2008
Jeremy writes…
This week I participated in acquiring a new computer – there is quite a range to choose from. Computers have become a part of everyday life as we now know it in one form or another. They control our cars, supermarket checkouts, produce our newspapers and indeed are used to produce this notice sheet. They connect us to the internet, store our photos and music and in time will bring us our TV pictures.
As I understand it, computers work by undertaking billions and billions of minute calculations very quickly that would be impossible for us to undertake. To me, it is complete mystery as to how they work or are controlled.
So is this computer appreciation Sunday or what? Well not really but they can be a picture of God’s love and understanding of us. God’s knowledge of us is not only vast but bang up to date. There is no part of our complex lives beyond God’s knowledge and anything we do or think, or is done to us, is immediately part of God’s instantaneous “computation” of our circumstances and of us. God’s love for us does not need to be upgraded, rebooted, speeded up or connected up. God’s activity is faster than any computer, certainly lasts longer and also like computers gets everywhere. No part of us is beyond God’s understanding. Finally, in the 21st century, we cannot live without computers and similarly we cannot live with out God’s love.
With love, Jeremy.
